Position:  Business Development Manager

Reports to: Marketing & Business Development Director


Primary Role

This role provides business development support to selected industry sector and practice groups.  These are likely to be Corporate, Commercial IP/IT and the Technology sector. The location of the role is flexible but ideally would be London based. 


The post-holder will work with the BD Director, marketing colleagues and individual partners and teams:

  • Providing direction on how best to execute the BD elements of groups' strategic plans

Targeting programme –

  • Identify opportunities for tender and credential submissions
  • Develop productive new-work pipelines
  • Identify the characteristics of an 'ideal' client
  • Research the market to identify suitable targets
  • Generate reasons to call
  • Mentor fee earners in BD skills including presentations
  • Assist with presentations
  • Monitor key developments in the relevant sector group(s)

Client retention programme  - work with BD Director and individual teams to:

  • Identify cross selling opportunities
  • Monitor and manage appropriate client care, retention and development
  • Contribute to relevant Key Account Management initiatives

Development of marketing campaigns in conjunction with the relevant marketing specialists, to include:

  • Events programmes
  • Direct mail campaigns
  • Social media
  • Materials for press and general media
  • Other promotional activities

Development and measurement of Marketing Return on Investment (MROI)

  • Develop appropriate success measures
  • Manage the other marketing & BD resources to support the delivery of the objectives in the teams' strategic plans


  • Assist with the preparation of the BD budget and ensure it is monitored appropriately on an ongoing basis
  • Liaise with the training & development team to help identify and deliver appropriate BD training to fee earners
  • To assist other members of the Marketing and Business Development team as needed
  • Take responsibility for self development and training
