(Archived) Head of Scientific Services – Independent Medcomms Agency – London / Remote – To £120k & Bonus

Last Updated: 11/18/21

Job Description

Independent, award-winning medcomms agency seeks new Head of Scientific Services.

Are you longing to move away from large-agency culture and join an agile, responsive team where you can really make a difference? The role would suit an existing Head of Scientific Services or an experienced Scientific Director who is looking for promotion.

A flexible and remote working option is also available and the salary (up to £120k) comes with an additional 10% bonus – assuming agency targets are met, which they have been for the last four years.

The agency

This fast-growing, independent 25-person communications agency delivers highly effective, insight-driven medical communication and education programmes, predominantly for global clients.

They work with national and international healthcare companies to gain a deep understanding of their audiences, build strong mutually rewarding relationships and deliver consistently effective and compelling communication programmes that improve the understanding of medical conditions and their treatments.

This could be a 100% work from home role if desired but ideally you would visit the office now and then. This is an inclusive, family-friendly company that cares about people’s commitments beyond work. People love working there – the agency’s Glassdoor score is an excellent 4.5.

The agency also excels in personal training and development with programmes for all levels of seniority far above the industry norm.

The Head of Scientific Services role

The Head of Scientific Services will be a key member of the Senior Management Team and as such will contribute to the company’s key strategic decisions and hold functional accountability for the Scientific Services team.

You will head up a number of teams comprising Scientific Director, Principal Medical Writer, Senior Medical Writer and Medical Writer who work alongside the agency’s Head of Strategy.

It is expected that the Head of Scientific Services will have the following focus:

  • Be an ambassador for the agency, maximising opportunities to engage clients with high level scientific support, and to sell in agency services across brand or therapy areas

  • Proactively work alongside fellow senior team members to identify opportunities with new and existing clients to increase the scope of work ‘from project to programme’

  • Develop and build the existing, high performing Scientific Services team, providing leadership, guidance and support, and ensuring development opportunities as appropriate

  • Ensure consistent delivery of the highest quality, science-led communications

  • Manage the structural, resourcing, and logistical needs of the department and ensure that value is added to the company at all times

Experience and competencies required

  • A solid and broad understanding of international and national medical communication practices and offerings and their application to pharmaceutical brands at various stages of the product lifecycle

  • Strong interpersonal skills and, in particular, an open, transparent communication style coupled with the ability to build solid, credible relationships internally and externally based on energy, trust and experience

  • The energy and ability to engage with and excite any audience, internal or external about science and medicine and to foster clear understanding by all parties

  • A passion for investigating new opportunities to increase both the scope of the company’s offerings and the breadth of companies with whom they engage

  • The ability to plan and direct the translation of science into engaging content for a variety of media, across multiple channels

  • The ability to direct a team to deliver highest-quality outputs in a client-focused manner

  • The ability to interrogate briefs and create and execute approaches that win pitches

  • A solid commercial understanding within the healthcare agency setting

  • A high level of self-awareness and a growth mindset

  • Minimum PhD level in a Biomedical Science

  • Minimum 10 years’ medical education agency experience

  • Significant career progression in a single company or holding group of companies

  • Personal involvement in both the development, presentation and winning of high value new business pitches and in significant organic business growth

  • Team building, coaching, directing and mentoring of scientific services staff

  • Ability to work effectively within a high-pressure environment

Salary and benefits

  • Full-time position with flexible and remote working option

  • Competitive salary based on experience (to £120k)

  • Annual 10% bonus based on agency and individual performance

  • Training programmes far above industry standard

  • Some international travel likely
