The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is a world-leading research organisation that provides independent, objective information on military, geopolitical and geo-economic developments that could lead to conflict.

The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is a world-leading research organisation that provides independent, objective information on military, geopolitical and geo-economic developments that could lead to conflict.

An opportunity has arisen for a Digital Graphics Designer to join the Publications team at its London headquarters. This position will report to the Design Manager.

Role description

The successful candidate will bring design know-how and creativity to our graphics across all digital channels: producing interactive website graphics; bringing innovation to graphics and animations for our online data platforms; and creating digital graphic designs for our flagship publications that tell compelling stories – from agenda-setting geopolitical statistics to military hardware schematics.

We seek a skilled visual storyteller with a strong track record and keen understanding of maps and data. You will also have to design with motion in mind – working with coders who can bring this to life – but animation expertise of your own would be highly desirable.

Candidates must be experienced and show evidence of a strong background in digital design. You will demonstrate a prowess for creative visual solutions while adhering to brand guidelines. If you are ready to influence some of the world’s largest organisations and governments, as well as world renowned journalists and academics – we want to hear from you.

What you will be doing

  • Working with researchers to develop stimulating graphics - turning text blogs into arresting visual content.
  • Transforming complex data sets into visually exciting and interactive content for mobile, tablets and desktops.
  • Guiding and educating research staff to understand how visualisation of data can help them effectively communicate their insights and analysis to key audiences.
  • Mining our rich databases to find raw statistics you can tap into – bringing this date to life using graphs, charts and maps.
  • Working with in-house teams to create and develop online data visualisation products.
  • Developing on our digital style guide to ensure our online presence is visually cohesive.
  • Working with our print designers to ensure there is continuity between our print and digital output.

Requirements – essential

  • Excellent knowledge and experience using Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Strong skills in layout, typography and infographic creation demonstrated through your portfolio.
  • A thorough understanding of social media platforms and their visual language.
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in design - digital, graphic or product.
  • Portfolio showing sharp, clean approaches to data visualisation across different devices.
  • Design experience implementing 'digital-first' solutions from start to end.

Requirements – desirable

  • Comfortable experimenting with and learning how to use new software and other tools.
  • Knowledge and experience with animation and motion graphics tools.
  • Previous experience working for clients in the political, government, or non-profit sector and an interest in and understanding of security and geopolitical issues.
  • Skills and passion to work with existing in-house print designers and in-house data development/html coding role.
  • An understanding of designing for new digital projects, working with in-house teams on UI and producing relevant digital assets.

Remuneration:

Salary: £35,000 - £40,000 depending on experience.  The IISS provides a full employment package. More information about the IISS can be found at www.iiss.org.

Application

Candidates should submit two documents:

  • a full Curriculum Vitae (resume) including a link to portfolio that includes examples of infographics, animated graphs or charts or anything else that demonstrates your ability to bring data to life,
  • a cover letter outlining what skills and experience you can bring to the role.

Candidates must have eligibility to work in the UK. The IISS regrets that it cannot sponsor visas for this position.

The IISS is an equal opportunities employer.
