The Communications Manager plays a key role in developing and delivering communications, marketing, website and partnership support for the Global Species & Key Biodiversity Areas Programme, in association with the Species Survival Commission (SSC). The position requires innovative thinking and strategic skills to identify, develop and implement such strategies.
The Communications Manager is required to work in close collaboration with the Species Media and Communications Officer based in IUCN HQ, Switzerland, and liaise with IUCN networks in engaging a broad range of stakeholders. JOB DESCRIPTION General
• Lead on the development and implementation of a species communications strategy (including media, marketing, website and on-line fundraising activities and social media content) for the Global Species Programme in close collaboration with the Species Media and Communications Officer. This will include communication of key products such as The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and KBAs, as a contribution to the Species Strategic Plan and the IUCN Programme (2017-2020).
• Work in support of the Species Survival Commission in the delivery of the species communications strategy.
Communications and marketing
• Work with the IUCN Media and Communications Manager and the Species Media and Communication Officer to develop press releases, web stories and social media content for The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and other species conservation work.
• Respond to media queries related to IUCN’s species work in the absence of the Species Media and Communications Officer.
• Oversee production of a range of materials such as brochures, fact sheets, concept papers, posters, displays, videos etc. This includes managing the work of external service providers (graphic designers, printers etc.)
• Oversee all IUCN Red List of Threatened Species branded products to ensure brand integrity and visual identity is maintained.
• In conjunction with the Publications Manager, ensure that all IUCN and IUCN Red List publications produced through the Global Species Programme and the SSC Specialist Groups adhere to agreed guidelines and ensure publications are available via the IUCN library and on the publications pages of the Species website and IUCN Red List website
• Depending on available resources, support the production of the Species Magazine (Annual Report)
• Responsible for providing marketing and communications support as required as part of the Toyota - IUCN Red List partnership:
o Develop and implement yearly communications strategy in conjunction with the Director and Deputy Director of the GSP (includes management of translation of relevant content from The IUCN Red List website into Japanese)
o Support event management to showcase the partnership
• Strengthen links and working relationships with partner organisations including the IUCN Red List Partner organizations to enhance communication of The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
• Work with the Zoo, Aquarium and Botanic Garden networks to increase use of The IUCN Red List scale on signage and other publicity (publications, websites etc.) with the objective of raising the profile of The IUCN Red List and the work of the Global Species & KBA Programme and the SSC.
• Support the fundraising efforts of the Global Species Programme through assisting with the development of fundraising proposals;
• Working with The IUCN Red List Unit, Support the management of the on-line donation facility on the IUCN Red List website, including implementation of regular on-line fundraising campaigns; REQUIREMENTS • Professional experience with a focus on communications and marketing fundraising, preferably in a similar position in the species /conservation/environment sector;
• University degree, preferably at the Master’s level, in communications, marketing or a relevant field;
• Experience developing and implementing communications and marketing strategies and some experience in building brand value.
• Solid knowledge and understanding of traditional media and social media
• Experience in development of on-line fundraising campaigns beneficial;
• Outstanding writing and editing skills; strong attention to detail;
• English – native level; French and Spanish – an advantage;
• Strong interpersonal and presentation skills;
• Solutions oriented approach: demonstrates an ‘outside the box’ attitude;
• Ability to cope with varied workload and flexible working hours, and able to work independently.
