Business Development at Addison Group

Business Development is a critical function within Addison Group and is integrated into a single department alongside Consultancy and Digital Analytics. The rationale for this is that these disciplines play a leading role in both marketing the agency and developing and converting new business, by providing the market intelligence, insight and guidance that gives us such a distinctive positioning in the minds of our current and prospective clients. The Business Development Director is a vital and influential individual within Addison Group, and works closely with the CEO and Executive Committee. This position reports direct to the Executive Director, Consulting and Business Development.

Purpose of the role

The purpose of the Business Development Director role is to help ensure Addison Group meets the new business targets set for the agency on an annual basis. The role has two distinct parts: acquiring and converting new business opportunities and raising awareness and preference for the agency in our target markets. As such, The Business Development Director has primary responsibility for the following:

  • Identifying, cultivating and qualifying new business leads and opportunities within our target markets
  • Along with other Principals, leading and coordinating Addison Group’s internal teams and activities in preparation for specific new business opportunities, so as to ensure we respond in the most distinctive and competitive manner
  • Devising, executing and managing Addison Group’s annual marketing and promotional activities, including digital marketing and communications, events, seminars, and participation in networking or media opportunities
  • Providing the Executive Committee with timely and accurate information regarding the scope, number and potential value of new business opportunities, to aid with the company’s budgeting and forecasting obligations
  • Participating in Addison Group’s Operating Committee, a senior decision-making forum attended by representative from all functions within the company, and charged with ensuring that the critical operating requirements of the business are managed in the most efficient manner


The Business Development Director heads up the Business Development team, consisting of a Marketing Manager and Business Development Executive. As part of the wider Consulting and Business Development team though, The Business Development Director works closely with the Consultancy team, coordinating their contribution to assessing key industry and communication trends, identifying prospects and engaging in initial contact with those prospects. The principal responsibilities of the role are to:Responsibilities

  • Provide information and insight on key market developments, material changes in client/prospect operations and activities, as well as regular updates on Addison Group’s competitors
  • Ensure that Addison Group’s contact management database (Salesforce) provides accurate and relevant lead information at all times
  • Oversee and undertake regular contact identification and management activities, to ensure that the database is accurate and contacts are aware of and understand Addison Group’s offer and capabilities
  • Manage incoming briefs/tenders and work with senior management to qualify opportunities and the appropriate response to them
  • Direct and coordinate the agency’s preparation of submissions and pitch presentations, working closely with personnel from consulting, client services, creative, production and technology to ensure the most effective and efficient response
  • Maintain overall control for the maintenance and development of the Addison Group website, including coordination of redesigns and upgrades
  • Maintain overall control for the agency’s social media activities, including control and coordination of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube feeds
  • Oversee and manage the creation of marketing and business development collateral in line with the marketing activities and priorities agreed with the Executive Committee
  • Coordinate and support the development of Addison Group’s research and insight programme, including project managing the development of research documents, presentations and emailers
  • Oversee Addison Group’s award submissions programme, and ensure submissions are done on time and in the required manner
  • Oversee and coordinate Addison Group’s events programmes, including venue identification, hire and set up, and support consultancy team in the preparation of presentations and supporting material

Required skills, experience and qualifications

The role requires excellent knowledge of our market and target clients, a full understanding of Addison’s Group’s offer, and how we tailor it to meet specific market demands, and strong organisational and interpersonal skills to ensure the effective delivery of the agency’s business development and marketing strategies. In particular, these are the most important attributes any candidate will need to possess.

  • Good working knowledge of the dynamics and trends of the European corporate communications market
  • Good working knowledge of Addison Group’s core market (European top 250 companies by market cap), including priority companies, key personnel and existing competitor -agency relationships
  • Expertise in all aspects of client acquisition – from first contact through to creative pitch – with the ability to prioritise and organise internal resources and expertise to capitalise on opportunities
  • Excellent marketing project management skills, with a strong understanding of digital marketing techniques and practices in particular
  • Strong organisational and interpersonal skills
  • A graduate with solid experience in a marketing or CRM role (either agency or client side)
  • Proven track record in managing complex projects to delivery on time and on budget
  • Demonstrable experience in working effectively in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Knowledge of agency dynamics and creative process a benefit
