Job Role
Communications

  • 2018 marks the Centenary of women being given the vote. This role will deliver activity over the 12-month period, driving enthusiasm and momentum leading to a cross Whitehall conference in November 2018. A number of these events will be public facing with a regional focus and will require someone with some events background to co-ordinate these.
  • The Gender Recognition Act consultation is due to be launched in early 2018. Part of this will involve reaching out to LGBT communities, through a series of regional events, to explain the consultation and potential activity following this. This is a sensitive policy area and will require careful handling.
  • A consultation on the experiences of the LGBT communities in the UK finished on 15 October, attracting over 100,000 responses. Once these have been analysed we will be launching an LGBT action plan to tackle the issues raised. This role will require strong project management skills and the ability to co-ordinate activity with other government departments.

These are all high profile areas with a significant amount of interest from Ministers. Furthermore, the department receives vast amounts of news coverage with regular front pages in national newspapers and large amounts of digital content.

  • They require the delivery of a breadth of high quality communications to help ensure successful policy implementation.
  • lead on organising key national public-facing events;
  • lead a thorough and wide-ranging programme of external front line engagement with support from GEO officials;
  • host high-level roundtables with significant frontline stakeholders/other government departments (OGDs);
  • stay close to departmental work on engagement with LGBT communities;
  • ensure experts are engaged to best effect;
  • recruit and manage relationships with PR agencies;
  • advise and update officials and Ministers on a regular basis:
  • organise events;
  • have strong project management skills;
  • listen openly to all stakeholder views;
  • engage with the LGBT community and centenary-focused groups to ensure we are designing projects that will work for them and deliver strong outcomes
  • This work is most likely to take place in the Department, but engaging directly and influencing young people (in particular girls for the Centenary activity) and the LGBT community. Some engagement will also be with OGDs and regional groups associated with the centenary.
  • Organising and co-ordinating events that fulfil policy objectives to consult on the GRA and celebrate the centenary will be complex and require strong project management skills to drive forward this activity.
  • For the frontline, the advisers will be a more credible face of this work - able to talk to relevant stakeholders and understand better their issues. This will be crucial in ensuring we properly understand the issues faced and are able to secure buy-in.
  • Engagement with OGDs will also be a key part of this role. The centenary celebration requires cross government co-ordination and the GRA consultation involves liaising with Department of Health officials.
  • The majority (70%+) of this role will be time spent organising events, in roundtables, meeting with frontline groups, project management and stakeholder management.
  • The experts will also be required to regularly meet with officials and Ministers to discuss the progress of activity highlighting and risk and cost implications.
