External Relations Advisor - Media Measurement
About our team and what we do
Our insight and measurement team sits within Shell External Relations Strategy and Planning. Our role is to support Shell's reputation-building activities to have the greatest positive impact. We do this by providing the essential understanding of Shell's external audiences required to plan communications effectively and by providing measures of impact of Shell's communications activities so that we can target resources on what works best. Our work is used throughout the Shell External Relations network globally, to help engage with other parts of the Shell Business and to brief the highest levels in Shell about the status of Shell’s reputation and the impact of various initiatives.
We are a small and experienced group of specialists in our fields. Our core skills are opinion research and media monitoring and we work with the best third party agencies and tools available. We combine analysis and interpretation with business knowledge and communications skills to provide valued inputs and counsel to our colleagues.
External Relations at Shell
Good external relations are essential to a business with Shell’s global reach. We started operations in the UK more than 110 years ago. Today we’re the UK’s largest FTSE 100 company (by market capitalisation). We process 35% of the gas coming into the UK and serve more than four million customers at our filling stations each week. Because we touch so many lives, businesses and communities, transparency is key. Join us and you’ll help us make sure that the impact we have on society and environment around us is understood and that we maintain our reputation as a responsible operator.
What’s the role?
As we launch a new approach to measurement and insights for our External Relations group worldwide, we need someone with outstanding media measurement skills to support us in generating and delivering media monitoring analysis and insights.
Part of a small, highly experienced measurement team in our Strategy and Planning Centre of Excellence in Waterloo, you’ll be our go-to expert on the media landscape in our key markets (and the channels within it). Your work will help colleagues to be more effective by allowing them to better understand the external environment they’re communicating with and to see how well their key messages are landing.
Initially, you’ll focus on:
- Managing a portfolio of media measurement tools used to deliver the best overall value in terms of depth of analysis, ease of use and breadth of coverage. Working with colleagues across Shell (especially in IT) to ensure we benefit from sharing best practice in external media sensing and analytics.
- Taking care of the contractual relationship between Shell and our media monitoring suppliers.
- Providing insights to support major business decisions and comms campaigns as well as evaluating impact of external communications efforts.
Over time, you can look forward to sharing your expertise too, designing and delivering training to create up 24-7 network of Shell users who are conversant with our media monitoring tools.
What we need from you
This is important territory for us, so it’s vital you’ve done this successfully before. We’re looking for strong experience in media Analysis and Measurement including and expert understanding of industry best practice across print, broadcast, digital and social. It’s likely you’ve sharpened your skills with an international media analysis supplier (agency side) or managing media analysis in a communications department (client side) – or, better still, both.
Shell has a highly collaborative culture, so you’ll be putting your accomplished all-round people skills to good use. You’re a natural relationship-builder – someone who’s shown they can work effectively with geographically dispersed, multicultural teams, both internally and externally. You’ve cultivated strong supplier negotiation and contract management skills and shown you’re a good writer – someone who can identify the key points from large data sets and to communicate them simply and accurately to a range of audiences.
Add to that as many of the following as possible, and we’d love to hear from you:
- Expertise in analysis with digital and social media monitoring tools e.g. Sysomos, Synthesio, Brandwatch.
- Comfortable with both quantitative and qualitative data analysis – reading data tables, manipulating data in MS excel, human and machine sentiment coding.
- A Marketing or Communications qualification with a strong media measurement component e.g. CAM Diploma in Digital Marketing (Metrics and Analytics), AMEC International Certificate
