How To Find The Right Marketing Job

You've made the decision to take the plunge and start the job hunt. Congratulations! You've already completed the first vital step, so you've made a good start; making the initial decision is sometimes the most difficult part of the process. Now you need to think about what that move looks like. What do you see as a good career move? What kind of business or role is going to suit you moving forward? You might be fully aware of the direction you wish to take. You might also feel unsure and in need of some advice, so we've created this 5-step checklist to help you structure your search in the early stages, and to make it a little more fun, we've added some cake. We like cake.
#1 Analyse your existing skills
Take a look at what you’ve been doing in your current job and analyse what it is that you’re particularly good at. Look at your strengths and weaknesses. Areas where you’ve experienced success and areas that you’ve found troublesome will help you define your current skill-set. This should then help you to establish what type of role you should be looking for moving forward. Try writing these down on a piece of paper; sometimes it helps to physically visualise these rather than trying to think of them and getting muddled in the process.
#2 Work out your top 10 requirements for a role
The job search isn’t just about you trying to impress. It’s vital that you have your own set of requirements for a role. You should never be so desperate that you just take anything without really thinking about it. Draw up a list of requirements and make sure you stick to these during the search and application process. It will help you focus all of your efforts on roles you actually care about and eliminate time wasting. For example, perhaps you’d like to get some experience in a large corporate organisation. Maybe you’re looking for autonomy or to work as part of a larger team. You might be looking for managerial experience. If you’re not sure what your requirements are, split them up into categories and work from there (we recommend thinking about the people you want to work with, results you want to achieve, company culture, values and products and services that mean something to you.) #3 Explore your options
Consider everything that comes your way. You might be surprised by what some businesses have to offer in terms of roles so don’t operate on a strict black/white basis. Make sure you’ve got a thorough understanding of every marketing job you come across before you decide to either discard or engage with them. An easy way to ensure you don't miss out on anything is to allocate at least 10 minutes of research to each role you come across. Research the company, the industry and other people who do similar jobs. You'll know after 10 minutes whether you'd like to continue learning about the business or whether you're going to bin it off.
#4 Do your research
Just because your best friend hated a specific role or industry doesn’t mean that you will too. It’s so important that you do as much research as possible and make decisions based off your own findings. A fast-paced busy environment might not have agreed with your shy, introverted friend but it might be ideal for someone like you who thrives among organised chaos. Similarly, research your industries. You might be pleasantly surprised by what you find. This research will help you to centre and focus all your efforts in the right areas.
#5 Understand marketing job titles
Marketing has grown rapidly inline with the evolution of technology and with that has come several new departments and, indeed, obscure and more unusual job titles. It’s important to understand what these job titles mean as you might find that a pathway you hadn’t considered before may be relevant to you and your existing skill-set.
